Since the debut of the tiny, colorful bricks around a century ago, Lego® has completely dominated the toy market. While the bricks initially were more geared towards creating things from scratch, as pop culture became increasingly relevant around the world, there was an emergence of themed Lego sets and builds designed to capture and recreate some of our favorite scenes, characters, and ideas. Keep reading to learn a little more about a few of the absolute coolest top-selling Lego sets to ever come out!
MetalBeard’s Duel (The Lego Movie)
Every true fan of Lego has undoubtedly seen The Lego Movie—and who can forget the epic battle that takes place toward the movie’s climax featuring a colorful ensemble of characters including the Nick Offerman-voiced MetalBeard, the former Lego pirate who lost most of his body and had to reconstruct it from an assortment of pieces. Seeing him pilot his giant mecha-suit was a hype-worthy moment, and it also makes for an incredibly popular Lego set!
The Ninjago NinjaCopter
Ninjas have been popular for a long time—and even if you prefer pirates, you can’t deny how cool the Ninjago NinjaCopter is. Right out of a Saturday morning cartoon, it features multiple moving parts, rubber-tipped projectiles, and an inherent coolness factor that has made it a best-seller.
Green Building Plate
On the outside, there’s nothing relatively special or fancy about the Green Building Plate. But as simple and affordable as it may be, it’s essential for any Lego creator, as it allows freeform building and allows builders to easily arrange their structures and hold them in place. While it’s not technically a set, it’s assisted in the construction of countless other sets and remains one of the best-selling Lego items around.
The Millennium Falcon
It’s no surprise that due to the incredible popularity of the Star Wars franchise, all kinds of Lego sets pay homage to our beloved galaxy far, far away. And of these sets, perhaps the most iconic is Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon. This massive build is close to 60 centimeters in length and weighs over two kilograms, and includes Luke, Princess Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan, and Darth Vader mini-figures.
Lego Mindstorms RIS 2.0
In 1998, Lego’s Mindstorms line introduced robotics to the construction toy series—and if your middle or high school had a robotics club, you might remember these amazing kits. They featured a large “brick” called the RIS, which was a programmable built-in computer capable of receiving data through infrared sensors, which could ultimately be used to relay motion and commands. Or in English, it let you build moving Lego creations! Used for both recreational and educational purposes, its success has been undeniable in teaching kids the fundamentals of robotics and engineering and it’s one of Lego’s all-time best-selling products.
