If you’re a fan of role-playing games, there’s no doubt you’ve heard of Dungeons & Dragons. Released back in the ’70s, this game’s once cult-like following has now exploded, in part thanks to the current resurgence of board games and tabletop adventures. However, if your last epic campaign has left you looking for a brief change of pace or something new, you’re in luck—there are all sorts of D&D-inspired games out there worth picking up for your next game night. Here are a few of the most exciting and trendy ones!
Mice and Mystics
Sometimes, it’s not about being the strongest swordsman, the most skilled archer, or the most powerful sorcerer. Sometimes it’s about using your humble wits to navigate all manner of perils—and sometimes, you must do so as a mouse! This game relies on the same creative-setting that D&D utilizes, in which players must traverse an imaginary space and achieve some sort of objective. However, the caveat is that players are mice, facing threats such as insects, a fearsome cat, and the like.
Shadowrun
Shadowrun is one of the many D&D clones on the market, though it’s one of the few with an original and exciting sci-fi twist. Published in 1989, it was an early predecessor of the “cyberpunk” genre that is now thriving today. In this game, players can upgrade their characters with cybernetic implants in addition to using magic, leading to endless types of playstyles and unique playthrough experiences.
Call of Cthulhu
For the fans of Lovecraftian-style horror, this game is based on the H.P. Lovecraft book of the same name and is now in its seventh edition. One player takes on the dungeon-master role; known as the “Keeper of Arcane Lore,” and it brings players into a realm of madness, as they attempt to solve crimes and discover dark mysteries.
Fallout: The Roleplaying Game
Fans of the Fallout franchise might recognize the RPG version of their beloved video game series. Players can create their characters from scratch and explore a wasteland filled with all sorts of threats to discover the secrets of a world that’s been completely changed. You can even play as a robot or a mutant; though keep in mind that this game uses the iconic 2D20 system, which means there might be a learning curve for those unfamiliar.
Bunkers & Badasses
Similarly, players of the Borderlands video games might recognize this RPD from the beloved universe. It’s a mock variant of D&D that plays quite differently; players can choose from any of the vault hunter classes inspired by the first two games, and gameplay and decisions are inspired accordingly.
Of course, these are just a few of the several Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games out there worth checking out. With such a storied history and impressive reach, it’s likely that more exciting spin-offs and versions will continue to be released, meaning you’ll never run out of adventures to have!
